White Wine Varietals

Types of white wines for novice drinkers.

Here are some types of white wines that are often recommended for beginners due to their approachable flavors and versatility:

  1. Chardonnay: Chardonnay is one of the most popular white wine varieties. It can range from crisp and refreshing with flavors of green apple and citrus to richer and creamier styles with notes of tropical fruit and vanilla. Look for unoaked or lightly oaked Chardonnays for a smoother introduction.
  2. Sauvignon Blanc: Sauvignon Blanc is known for its vibrant acidity and flavors of citrus, green apple, and sometimes grassy or herbal notes. It’s a great choice for those who enjoy zesty and refreshing wines.
  3. Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris: This white wine is often light, crisp, and easy-drinking, with flavors of pear, apple, and sometimes a touch of floral or mineral notes.
  4. Riesling: Riesling can vary from dry to sweet, and it’s celebrated for its aromatic profile with notes of stone fruit, honey, and floral elements. Look for dry or off-dry Rieslings if you prefer less sweetness.
  5. Gewürztraminer: Gewürztraminer is aromatic and can have flavors of lychee, rose petals, and spice. It’s a unique and fragrant choice for those looking to explore something different.
  6. Moscato: Moscato wines are often sweet and light, with flavors of ripe fruit like peach, apricot, and orange blossom. They can be a delightful introduction to sweet white wines.
  7. Chenin Blanc: Chenin Blanc offers a range of styles, from dry to sweet. It can have flavors of apple, honey, and even a hint of mineral character. Look for dryer versions if you prefer less sweetness.
  8. Albariño: Albariño is a crisp and refreshing white wine with flavors of citrus, peach, and sometimes a saline quality. It’s a great match for seafood and lighter dishes.

Remember, the best way to discover your preferences is to try different types of white wines and see which flavors resonate with you. As you gain more experience, you can explore other white wine varietals and styles to further expand your palate.

Too much alcohol on the nose? I describe it as the wine being hot. Try cooling it down. You can also tell if the wine is too cold if you can’t smell anything on the wine… warm it up by wrapping your hands agains the glass.
